Case study · GMX · Ghana Music Live

Ghana's music, radio and podcasts, in one app.

GMX started as Ghana Music Live: one app for the music, radio and podcasts that listeners in Ghana kept in separate apps. I was its sole product designer. I planned and ran the user interviews, then designed the app end to end. The client shipped it as GMX, in their own dark style, with the music and the player close to my design.

Live onApp Store
The player: Ride Along by Richmond Adu featuring Emma Badu, on a pink cover, with queue, favourite, add to playlist, share and download, the controls and lyrics.

Music, radio and podcasts side by side, in one app instead of three.

Music
The Music tab: a live event banner, trending songs and new releases from Ghanaian artists, with Discover, Genre, Artists and My Songs filters.
Radio
The radio schedule in the Media tab: shows by day, such as Wake Up Crew and Kwaku's Radio Adventure on Friday 18 October, with their times.
Podcasts
Podcasts in the Media tab: a Showbiz show brought to you by Joy FM, a six-hour radio broadcast of nightlife and events, and Women in Music below it.

What the interviews found

Two problems, straight from the people who would use it.

Before I designed a single screen, I planned and ran interviews with people in Ghana about how they listen. Two problems stood out.

01

Too many apps.

What I heard
Music in one app, radio in another, podcasts and music news somewhere else. Listening meant switching.
What I designed
One app for all of it, said from the very first screen: the all-in-one hub, then music, then podcasts and radio.
The first screen: Ghana Music Live, your all-in-one entertainment hub, with Continue and Sign in.

02

Local music, buried.

What I heard
On global apps, Ghanaian artists sat under international charts and took digging to find.
What I designed
Ghanaian artists first. The first-run picker opens with Sarkodie, MzVee, King Promise and Efya, so the app starts from local taste.
Choose 3 or more artists you like: a grid led by Sarkodie, MzVee, Kwame Eugene, King Promise, D Black, Mzbel, Pappy Kojo and Efya.
The live app: the player for Jaara by Sarkodie and Medikal, with the cover, progress bar, controls, and Download, Playlist, Equalizer and Share.
My design: the player for Ride Along, with the cover, actions, progress bar and controls.

Listening

The player shipped close to my design.

The client restyled the app dark, but the way you listen is the one I designed. The same player and controls, the same queue, the same add-to-playlist sheet and the same download states.

What carried overCover first, then the title, a red progress bar and the five controls, with download, add to playlist and share one tap away.

Drag across the phone to compare.

Paying to keep a song, with mobile money

I designed buying a download around the ways people pay in Ghana: mobile money first, then cards. If the payment prompt never arrives, the next screen walks you through approving it yourself.

01Choose how to pay

Download: pay GHC50.00, with MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money and G Money listed before card, PayPal and Apple Pay.

02Your MoMo number

Make payment: type your MTN MoMo number, with Go back and Buy.

03Approve it

Waiting for payment: six steps to approve it by dialling *170#, and the download starts once payment is received.

Where it stands

Live on the App Store, as GMX.

Ghana Music Live shipped as GMX. The client's team carried it on after handover and gave it a dark look. The way you listen (the player, playlists and downloads) is the part I designed.

Live onApp Store
The live GMX home: GH region, FM Radio and Podcast buttons, genre chips, a Now Rising banner and recently played.
The live artist page for Sarkodie: a large photo header, Follow, shuffle and play, and his popular songs.
A live playlist, Rapperholic, The Homecoming '25: the cover, play, shuffle, download and share, and its tracks.
Live FM radio: stations from Ghana such as Accra FM, Adom FM and Citi FM, each with its frequency and a play button.
Live podcasts for Ghana: Discover, Documentaries, Comedy and Interviews, with trending and technology shows.
Live search: genre tiles for Afrobeats, Afropop, AI, Amapiano, Anthem and Brass Band.
